The Cottage Loaf in Fordingbridge

Double-fronted shop front of The Cottage Loaf on Fordingbridge High Street

Wide windows at 51-53 High Street display trays of loaves and pastries from The Cottage Loaf. The bakery has traded from this double-fronted space since the company was incorporated in 2000, baking on the premises for more than 25 years. From the SP6 base it supplies both the town and a wider area.

award winning bread loafs

Bread forms the core of what comes out of the ovens: crusty baguettes, seeded rolls and the stacked cottage loaf that gives the place its name. These are filled with ham, cheese or salad for quick lunches. Cornish pasties and sausage rolls sit alongside them; the bakery took gold in the 2022 Great Hampshire Sausage & Pie Competition. Cakes range from Victoria sponges to custom celebration tiers, all mixed and baked fresh on site.

A sandwich van leaves each morning for local offices, carrying wraps and salads as well as the morning bakes. A separate wholesale round covers a 20-mile radius, keeping cafes and firms stocked through the day.

For larger occasions the team steps up with hog roasts or BBQs, handling delivery or full service without cutting details. Village fetes and private functions receive the same approach, with pies and breads anchoring the spreads.

Local flours are used where possible, and seasonal items such as elderflower scones appear in summer. Herb-infused focaccia turns up among the regulars, a small nod to the surrounding woods. Flags and bunting mark the frontage. Builders stop for bacon rolls on early mornings; families collect treats later in the day.

The bakery sits close enough to the New Forest edge that those surroundings show in small menu adjustments, while the High Street location keeps it central to the town’s daily trade and the picnics that head out toward the Avon.
