Sandy Balls Holiday Village sits on a wooded estate between Godshill and Fordingbridge. Its name dates back centuries and originally described the sandy gravel mounds on the western boundary of the land. A short distance along the same road stands the Fighting Cocks, a long established country pub popular with walkers, cyclists and local residents. Both places lie close enough to the works that highway engineers felt the need to reassure visitors that access was unaffected.

The notice serves a clear purpose. Temporary traffic lights and partial closures are a regular feature of rural Hampshire routes, and clear information helps prevent unnecessary diversions. In this case the board has the added effect of placing two of the area’s most distinctive place names side by side.
