Sandy Balls and the Fighting Cocks still open despite road works
Drivers and walkers approaching Godshill from Fordingbridge sometimes pass a temporary yellow notice that simply states Sandy Balls and the Fighting Cocks remain open despite road works. The wording is practical, yet the pairing of the two names still draws a smile from those who know the area.

The notice serves a clear purpose. Temporary traffic lights and partial closures are a regular feature of rural Hampshire routes, and clear information helps prevent unnecessary diversions. In this case the board has the added effect of placing two of the areaβs most distinctive place names side by side.
The photograph of the sign was first shared by Kirsty Rogers, who spotted it while out and about in Fordingbridge. It quickly circulated as a small reminder of the particular character of the Hampshire countryside, where historic names sit comfortably alongside everyday practicalities.
