Fordingbridge Kid’s Pocket Change Turns into Care Home Cheer
In the quiet corners of Fordingbridge, where the Avon whispers past ancient thatched roofs, nine-year-old Alfie Jones has shown that a bit of heart and a lot of huffing can move mountains. Or at least fund a few minibus jaunts for folks who need them most.
It all kicked off with a simple visit. Alfie popped over to Bickerley Green Residential and Nursing Home in Ringwood to see his two great-grandparents. Spotting the home’s resident cat, Flint, looking a tad scruffy, he dug into his pocket money and handed over a donation to spruce things up for the furry friend.
But Alfie, never one to stop at half measures, reckoned he could do more. “I love visiting Bickerley Green and seeing everyone,” he says. So he signed up for the Junior Great South Run, a 2.5km dash that had him trading lazy afternoons for training sessions.
Come 18 October, under a crisp autumn sky, Alfie lined up with hundreds of other juniors in Portsmouth. Friends and family cheered him on as he pounded the course, clocking 17 minutes flat. Back home, the JustGiving page lit up like Bonfire Night. By the end, he’d pulled in over £1,200 – enough to kit out the care home’s minibus for outings to spots that get residents grinning again.
His mum, Sherri, beams with pride. “I’m so proud of Alfie for committing himself to raising all that money and completing the run, knowing it will make the residents’ lives so much happier.” And Alfie? He’s chuffed too. “I can’t believe I raised that much! I hated running before but now I actually quite like it.”
Over at Bickerley Green, manager Tracy Flint is lost for words. “What Alfie has done will make such a difference, enabling our residents to enjoy a trip out to places they will enjoy. It’s been truly overwhelming.”
In a world that often feels too fast, this Fordingbridge lad reminds us how one small sprint can spark real warmth. With funds earmarked for those feel-good escapes, the home’s crew are already plotting routes to the seaside or local parks. Alfie’s not just boosted the coffers; he’s woven a thread of joy through the daily rhythm there.
As the leaves turn in the New Forest, stories like Alfie’s pop up like unexpected wildflowers. They nudge us to look closer at our own neighbourhoods, where a nine-year-old’s grit can light up lives we might otherwise overlook. Who’s next to lace up and lend a hand?
