Fordingbridge Choral Society
In the market town of Fordingbridge, a group of singers comes together to perform classical choral music. The Fordingbridge Choral Society has been active for more than four decades, drawing members from the town and nearby villages.
With around 40 participants, the society focuses on a varied selection of pieces, spanning madrigals and part songs through to larger works by composers such as Bach, Brahms, Britten, Handel, Bernstein, Purcell and Haydn. This range allows singers to explore different styles while contributing to public performances.
The society’s main aim is to promote education and appreciation of music through concerts and recitals. Most events take place in the historic St Mary’s Church, which dates back to the 12th century and provides an atmospheric setting for the music. The group has also appeared in other local churches and halls, extending its reach within the region. Rehearsals happen every Wednesday evening from 7.30pm to 9.15pm at the Church Hall of the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows and St Philip Benizi on Salisbury Road. This regular schedule helps members build skills and prepare for upcoming shows.
The musical director, Nigel Edwards, guides the ensemble. He brings extensive experience, having started as a chorister at St Paul’s Cathedral and later studying at the Royal College of Music. His career includes roles as a violinist with orchestras like the BBC Concert Orchestra and directing other vocal groups.
Under his leadership, the society tackles ambitious pieces, often collaborating with professional instrumentalists from the Edwards Ensemble.
